Summary
Torilis nodosa, commonly known as knotted hedgeparsley or short sock-destroyer, is an annual herb native to a variety of habitats including grasslands, roadsides, and open woodlands in the Mediterranean Basin and parts of Europe. It typically grows up to 20 inches tall with hairy stems and alternately arranged leaves that are divided into smooth-edged leaflets. The plant produces small, inconspicuous white flowers arranged in umbels, which are followed by spiny fruits that can cling to clothing and fur, hence the name "sock-destroyer".
Knotted hedgeparsley is not commonly cultivated but may be of interest for naturalistic plantings or as a curiosity in an herb garden. It prefers full sun to part shade and tolerates a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. While it is not known for any particular ornamental qualities, its ability to thrive in disturbed areas makes it a resilient plant. Gardeners should be cautious, as Torilis nodosa can become invasive outside its native range, spreading rapidly and outcompeting native flora.CC BY-SA 4.0
