Summary
Sporobolus stapfianus, commonly known as Resurrection Grass, Giant Rat’s Tail Grass, Giant Parramatta Grass, or Rat’s Tail Dropseed, is a perennial grass native to open grasslands and savannas in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and parts of Asia. It thrives in a variety of soil types, often on sandy or clay substrates. This species exhibits a rapid growth rate, reaching heights of 3.3-7 feet (1-2.1 meters) and a spread of 1.6-3.3 feet (0.5-1 meter). It forms dense tufts of foliage and bears green, inconspicuous flowers during the summer months. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they do produce a significant amount of seed.
Resurrection Grass is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to revive after dry periods, hence its common name. It is often used for erosion control and as forage in its native range. However, its cultivation outside native areas should be approached with caution due to its potential to spread. In gardens, it requires full sun exposure and can adapt to a range of soil types, from clay to loam to sandy soils, with medium drainage. It is low maintenance, needing only low to medium amounts of water once established.CC BY-SA 4.0
