Summary
Smithiastrum prenanthoides, commonly known as California harebell, is a perennial herb native to the understory of montane coniferous forests and mixed evergreen forests in the Klamath Ranges, Cascade Range, Coastal Ranges, and parts of the Sierra Nevada in California and Oregon. It typically reaches a height of 2-3 feet and is characterized by its nodding blue-purple flowers that bloom in June and July. The California harebell has a delicate appearance, with slender stems and bell-shaped flowers that add a touch of grace to woodland gardens.
California harebell is appreciated for its charming flowers and its ability to thrive in the dappled shade of forested areas, making it a suitable choice for naturalistic plantings and shaded borders. It prefers moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and can be grown in part shade to full shade conditions. While it is not commonly used in large-scale urban plantings, it can be a delightful addition to native plant gardens and restoration projects. Gardeners should be aware that it may require protection from slugs and snails, which find its foliage attractive.CC BY-SA 4.0
