Summary

Senecio minimus, commonly known as toothed fireweed or coastal burnweed, is an annual or perennial herb that is native to coastal and subalpine areas of Australia and New Zealand. It has also become naturalized along the Pacific Coast of the United States, including Washington, Oregon, and California. Senecio minimus can grow up to 79 inches tall and is characterized by its toothed leaves and clusters of yellow or purple flower heads, each containing numerous small disc florets. The flowering season peaks in the summer, although it can flower year-round in some locations. The flowers are not particularly showy but are attractive to a variety of pollinators.

Toothed fireweed is valued for its ability to colonize disturbed sites, making it useful for erosion control and habitat restoration. It is often found in coastal environments, forest margins, and riparian zones, where it enjoys moist conditions with partial shade. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is not commonly used in ornamental horticulture, it can be a useful plant for naturalistic plantings and wildlife gardens. However, care should be taken as it can become weedy outside its native range. In its native habitat, it supports endemic herbivores such as the magpie moth, blue stem borer, and Senecio gall fly. In Otago, New Zealand, it is classified as nationally vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation.CC BY-SA 4.0
