Summary
Selaginella denticulata, commonly known as Mediterranean clubmoss, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the spikemoss family. It is native to a variety of habitats including rocky slopes, coastal areas, and open woodlands throughout the Mediterranean region, including Gibraltar and Portugal. It typically forms dense, low-growing mats with a creeping habit. The plant’s stems are prostrate to ascending, reaching lengths of up to 15 cm, and bear four rows of small, ovate, and slightly toothed (denticulate) leaves that give it a fine-textured appearance.
Mediterranean clubmoss is valued for its lush, evergreen foliage and its ability to thrive in a range of conditions, making it a versatile ground cover for gardens. It is often used in rock gardens, as an underplanting for larger shrubs, or in terrariums where its miniature landscape effect is appreciated. This spikemoss prefers partial to full shade and well-drained soil. It is generally free from serious pests and diseases, but overwatering can lead to root rot. Mediterranean clubmoss is not known for aggressive roots, making it a safe choice for most garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
