Summary
Scrophularia auriculata subsp. valentina, commonly known as Mediterranean Figwort or Water Figwort, is a perennial herb native to damp woodlands, riverbanks, and shady, moist places throughout the Mediterranean region. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). This plant features square stems and bears ovate to heart-shaped leaves. The inconspicuous green or red flowers, which bloom in the summer, are not particularly showy but are interesting upon close inspection and attract pollinators such as bees.
Mediterranean Figwort is valued for its ability to thrive in shaded conditions where other plants may struggle. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, woodland gardens, and as a component of riparian buffer plantings. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay and loam, provided they offer medium to fast drainage. While it prefers consistent moisture, it is somewhat drought-tolerant once established. Mediterranean Figwort can be grown in full sun to part shade, with part shade being ideal to mimic its native woodland habitat. Gardeners should be aware that this plant can spread by rhizomes and may become aggressive in some conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
