Schefflera taiwaniana, commonly known as Hardy Umbrella Plant, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the cloud forests and mountainous regions of Taiwan. It typically grows to 4 meters (13 feet) tall and 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) broad. The plant features large, palmate leaves up to 15 cm (5.9 inches) long, which are a notable characteristic. Young leaves are covered in silver hairs that give them a distinctive appearance, while mature leaves are glossy and have a smooth surface. In late summer, Schefflera taiwaniana produces sprays of subtle flowers, which are not particularly showy but are followed by dark, spherical berries in winter. These berries are a valuable food source for local wildlife, including insects and birds.

The Hardy Umbrella Plant is appreciated for its architectural foliage and its ability to add a tropical feel to temperate gardens. It is used in cultivation for urban planting, as a focal point in borders, and for adding evergreen structure. It is relatively easy to maintain, thriving in well-drained soils. While it prefers full sun or part shade, it can tolerate a range of light conditions, making it versatile for different garden settings.
