Summary

Rhododendron ponticum, commonly known as common rhododendron or pontic rhododendron, is an evergreen shrub native to the Iberian Peninsula, the Caucasus region, and parts of western Asia. It typically grows up to 16 feet (5 meters) tall and can spread equally wide, forming a dense, bushy habit. The plant is characterized by its large, glossy, dark green leaves and its showy purple or violet flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, providing a spectacular display.

In cultivation, Rhododendron ponticum is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to form dense thickets, making it useful for creating privacy screens or hedges. It thrives in acidic, well-drained soils and prefers part shade to full shade conditions, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods. Rhododendron ponticum can be susceptible to various pests and diseases, including rhododendron leafhopper, vine weevil, and phytophthora root rot. Due to its invasive nature, it is invasive across much of western Europe (including the UK, Ireland) and parts of New Zealand.CC BY-SA 4.0
