It typically grows to a height and width of 6-9 feet (1.8-2.7 meters) and is characterized by its rounded, dense form. The plant produces vibrant yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers that are quite showy and bloom profusely in the spring, attracting pollinators. The bark is rough and dark, adding to its visual interest throughout the year.

Rhigozum obovatum is valued for its drought tolerance and striking floral display, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens, xeriscaping, and as an ornamental feature in rockeries or dry landscapes. It is also used for creating natural hedges or screens in arid climates. This plant thrives in full sun and is adaptable to a variety of well-drained soils, including sandy and loamy types, requiring minimal water once established. While it is generally low-maintenance, it is important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. There are no major disease or pest issues, but it can be sensitive to frost.
