Summary
Quercus michauxii, commonly known as Swamp Chestnut Oak, is a deciduous tree native to bottomland forests, wetlands, and along streams in the southeastern United States. It can reach a height of 80 feet and a width of 30-50 feet. The tree has a rounded crown with dark, furrowed bark and broad, glossy leaves that turn shades of red and orange in autumn. The flowers are inconspicuous, but the large, edible acorns are notable, maturing in fall approximately 6 months after pollination and produced intermittently in heavy crops.
Swamp Chestnut Oak is valued for its adaptability to wet conditions and its use as a shade tree due to its broad canopy. It is suitable for large gardens, urban parks, and street planting where space permits. The tree prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade, and while it thrives in moist, well-drained soils, it is adaptable to different soil types.
