Summary
Primula laurentiana, commonly known as Birdeye Primrose, is a perennial herb that is deciduous or semi-deciduous depending on the climate. It is native to moist meadows, marshes, and the edges of freshwater systems in Eastern Canada, particularly in Quebec and Ontario. This species typically grows to a modest height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) with a similar spread. The Birdeye Primrose forms a rosette of oblong to spoon-shaped leaves, and in spring to early summer, it bears clusters of bright pink flowers with a yellow center, which are quite showy and attract pollinators.
The Birdeye Primrose is valued for its vibrant flowers and its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens, waterside plantings, and moist borders. It is also used for naturalizing in wildflower gardens. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. It requires consistently moist soil and does not tolerate drought well. There are no major disease problems, but it can be susceptible to root rot if drainage is poor.
