Summary
Polygonatum punctatum, commonly known as Hairy Solomon’s Seal, is a perennial herb that is semi-deciduous in colder climates and evergreen in milder ones. It is native to temperate forests and woodland margins in Southeast Asia and the Himalayas. This plant typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters), featuring arching stems and alternate, ovate leaves. The small, tubular pink flowers, which bloom in spring, dangle from the leaf axils and are followed by blackish-blue berries in the fall. The flowers are modest but add a delicate charm to woodland gardens.
Hairy Solomon’s Seal is valued for its graceful form and the textural contrast it provides in shaded garden areas. It is often used in border plantings, woodland gardens, and as an understory plant in shaded areas. It requires consistently moist soil with good drainage and thrives in part to full shade. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to slug damage and may suffer from leaf spot diseases. Gardeners should note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. It can spread to form colonies if conditions are favorable.CC BY-SA 4.0
