Podocarpus macrophyllus var. maki, commonly known as Buddhist Pine, Yew Pine, or Fern Pine, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to forested areas and mountain slopes in Taiwan, Southern China and possibly Japan. It is a more compact cultivar of Podocarpus macrophyllus, with a moderate growth rate, typically reaching 8.25-9.75 feet (2.5-3 meters) in height and 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters) in width. This variety has dense, upright branching and features narrow, leathery, dark green leaves that resemble those of a yew, contributing to its common names.

Buddhist Pine is valued for its formal appearance and is often used in foundation plantings, as a hedge, or in container gardens. It is also suitable for bonsai and topiary work due to its slow growth and ability to tolerate pruning. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and prefers medium or fast-draining soils such as clay, loam, or sandy types. While it is adaptable to various soil conditions, it thrives with consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions.
