Summary

Poa palustris, commonly known as fowl bluegrass, fowl meadowgrass, swamp meadowgrass, or woodland bluegrass, is a perennial grass native to temperate and cool regions of Asia, Europe, and North America. It is typically found in wet habitats such as riparian zones, wet meadows, marshes, and damp woodlands. Poa palustris forms dense tufts and can reach heights of 30-100 cm. It has a distinctive blue-green color and produces fine-textured, open flower panicles that are airy and not particularly showy, blooming from late spring to midsummer.

Fowl bluegrass is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making it useful for revegetation projects, especially in wetland restoration. It is also utilized as fodder and forage for livestock. In cultivation, it prefers consistently moist soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to partial shade.CC BY-SA 4.0
