Summary
Pittosporum phillyreoides, commonly known as weeping pittosporum or willow pittosporum, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to arid and semi-arid regions across Australia, including New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. It is often found in dry woodland, mallee, and shrubland areas where it is adapted to harsh conditions. This species can reach up to 33 feet (10 meters) in height and has a slender, columnar form with weeping branches that give it a distinctive appearance. The leaves are narrow, resembling those of a willow, and the small, honey-scented flowers are yellow to cream-colored, blooming in spring and summer. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they are attractive to pollinators. The bark is smooth and gray, and the plant may produce small, woody capsules containing seeds.
Weeping pittosporum is valued for its drought tolerance once established, making it a suitable choice for water-wise gardens. It is often used as a screen or windbreak, and its weeping form adds an element of grace to the landscape. In cultivation, it requires well-drained soils and thrives in full sun to part shade. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to scale insects and sooty mold. Gardeners should always check local guidelines.CC BY-SA 4.0
