Summary
Murdannia simplex, commonly known as Simple Dewflower, is an evergreen herbaceous plant native to Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and India, where it thrives in a variety of moist habitats including wetlands, grasslands, and along streams and rivers. It typically grows at a moderate rate to heights of 0.5-1.5 feet (0.15-0.45 meters) with a similar spread of 0.5-1 feet (0.15-0.3 meters). The Simple Dewflower is characterized by its slender, grass-like foliage and striking blue or purple flowers, which are quite showy and bloom profusely in the summer and fall months, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
The plant is valued for its ornamental flowers and is often used in water gardens, bog gardens, and as a ground cover in shaded areas. It is also suitable for container gardening due to its modest size. Murdannia simplex requires consistently moist soil and does best in part shade to full shade conditions, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add color to damp, shady spots. While it prefers medium to high amounts of water, it is adaptable to various soil types, including clay and loam, provided they offer medium to slow drainage. Care should be taken to avoid overly dry conditions, which can stress the plant.CC BY-SA 4.0
