Summary
Muhlenbergia reverchonii, commonly known as Seep Muhly, is a deciduous perennial grass native to limestone outcrops, rocky slopes, and grasslands in the southern United States and northern Mexico. It forms dense clumps with erect stems that can reach up to 80 centimeters tall. The inflorescence is a panicle of brown to purplish spikelets that appear in late summer to fall, adding a delicate texture to the garden. As the plant ages, it develops a curly, fibrous mass that can be quite ornamental. The cultivar ’Autumn Embers’ is notable for its panicles with a more pink coloration, which are particularly showy.
Seep Muhly is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is also used for erosion control on slopes. This grass is low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established, and is best grown in full sun to part shade.
