Michelia platypetala, commonly known as Plate-petal Magnolia, is an evergreen tree native to the subtropical forests of South-Central and Southeastern China. It typically grows to a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) and a width of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters). The tree has a compact, pyramidal form with glossy, dark green leaves that provide year-round interest. The fragrant flowers, which bloom in late winter to early spring, are creamy white with a hint of red at the base, and are considered quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Plate-petal Magnolia is valued for its ornamental flowers, evergreen foliage, and moderate size, which makes it suitable for smaller gardens and urban landscapes. It is often used as a specimen tree or in mixed borders. This magnolia prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and can tolerate light shade, though it flowers best in full sun.
