Summary

Maurandya barclayana, commonly known as Purple Snapdragon Vine, is a perennial climbing plant native to the rocky hillsides and scrublands of Mexico. It can grow up to 4 meters (13 feet) in height and is characterized by its ivy-like leaves and showy tubular flowers that bloom in summer and fall. The flowers come in shades of white, pink, or purple and are particularly attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators. This species is not to be confused with Brugmansia, which is also commonly called Purple Snapdragon Vine and contains toxic alkaloids.

Purple Snapdragon Vine is valued for its ornamental flowers and climbing habit, which make it an excellent choice for trellises, arbors, and walls in warm climates. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its exceptional qualities for garden use. In cultivation, it thrives in a sheltered position with full sun exposure. While it prefers medium-drained soils, it is drought-tolerant once established and requires low amounts of water. However, it is frost-sensitive and must be protected from freezing temperatures, often grown as a tender annual or overwintered indoors in temperate regions. Gardeners should be aware that while it is generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from aphids and whiteflies.CC BY-SA 4.0
