Summary
Malacothrix floccifera, commonly known as Woolly Desertdandelion, is an annual herb native to the arid and semi-arid regions of California, particularly the northern and central mountain ranges, including the Sierra Nevada, and extending into Nevada. It thrives in open, dry habitats such as desert scrub, grasslands, and the edges of woodlands. This plant typically grows to a height of up to 16 inches (40 cm) with a hairless flowering stem. The leaves are fleshy, oblong, and have a distinctive woolly or cottony texture, which helps to conserve moisture. The inflorescence is characterized by hairless phyllaries and showy ray florets that are usually white, but can sometimes be yellow, blooming in the spring and early summer.
Woolly Desertdandelion is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and rock gardens in regions with similar climates to its native habitat. It is also appreciated for its unique woolly foliage and delicate flowers, which can add texture and contrast to a garden setting. This plant prefers full sun. While it is not commonly used in large-scale cultivation, it can be an interesting addition to a native plant garden or a naturalized area.CC BY-SA 4.0
