Summary

Maianthemum tatsienense, commonly known as Chinese False Solomon’s Seal, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the understory of temperate forests and mountainous regions in Central and Southeastern China, as well as the Himalayas. It typically grows to a height of 1 foot (0.3 meters) and spreads to about 2 feet (0.6 meters). The plant features arching stems with alternate, ovate leaves and small, star-shaped greenish-white flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer. The flowers are modest in showiness but are followed by attractive black or red berries in late summer to fall.

Chinese False Solomon’s Seal is appreciated for its graceful foliage and the textural contrast it provides in shaded garden areas. It is commonly used in woodland gardens, shade gardens, and as ground cover under larger shrubs or trees. This plant is relatively low maintenance, requiring consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It prefers part shade but can tolerate full shade. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from slugs or snails. It is not known for aggressive roots or other significant problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
