Summary
Kreidion chinensis, commonly known as Japanese Kerria, is a deciduous shrub native to open woodlands, forest edges, and mountain slopes in China, Japan, and Korea. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) and a similar width, with a loose, arching form. The plant is renowned for its bright yellow flowers that bloom in early spring, with some cultivars offering repeat blooming throughout the summer. The flowers are showy, resembling small roses, which adds to the ornamental value of the shrub. The green stems remain attractive in winter after the leaves have fallen.
Japanese Kerria is valued for its ease of maintenance, tolerance of a wide range of soil conditions, and resistance to most pests and diseases. It is often used in border planting, as a specimen in woodland gardens, or for naturalizing in informal settings. The plant thrives in part shade to full sun, prefers well-drained soil, and requires regular watering, particularly in dry conditions. Popular cultivars include ’Pleniflora’ with double flowers and ’Golden Guinea’ with large, single flowers. While generally not invasive, it can spread by suckering, which should be managed by periodic thinning.CC BY-SA 4.0
