Summary
Kallstroemia parviflora, commonly known as small-flowered carpetweed or warty caltrop, is an annual herb native to arid and semi-arid regions, including desert grasslands, scrublands, and disturbed areas such as roadsides and railroads in the southwestern United States and extending into Central America. It typically sprawls across the ground with a pubescent stem ranging from 12 to 24 inches in length. The plant is characterized by its compound leaves, each with 4 pairs of leaflets, and its distinctive orange or yellow zygomorphic flowers that bloom in the warmer months.
Small-flowered carpetweed is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in dry, poor soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping and restoration projects in arid environments. It is often used to stabilize soil and prevent erosion in disturbed areas. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun and well-drained soils. While not commonly used in ornamental gardening, its resilience and adaptability can be beneficial in challenging landscapes.CC BY-SA 4.0
