Juniperus pseudosabina, commonly known as Turkestan juniper or dwarf black juniper, is a variable species that can grow as a shrub or small tree and is native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, including the Pamir and Tien Shan ranges. It is adapted to rocky slopes and alpine meadows where it contributes to the stability of the ecosystem. This juniper reaches 1–10 meters (3+1⁄2–33 feet) in height and exhibits a range of growth forms from low spreading shrubs to upright trees. It is largely dioecious with separate male and female plants, although some individuals are monoecious. The female cones are berry-like, 8–14 mm long and 7–10 mm in diameter, blue-black with a whitish waxy bloom, containing a single seed; they mature in about 18 months and are an important food source for wildlife. The male cones are 2–3 mm long and release pollen in late winter.

The Turkestan juniper is valued for its adaptability to various garden settings, offering year-round interest with its evergreen foliage and decorative cones. It is used for ornamental purposes, as a windbreak, and for soil erosion control on slopes. In cultivation, it requires full sun, medium amounts of water, and well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to juniper blight and may attract pests such as spider mites.
