Summary
Juncus sarophorus, commonly known as Broom Rush, is an evergreen perennial herb, that is native to wetlands, marshes, and along stream banks in Eastern Australia and New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 2-6 feet (0.6-1.8 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). Broom Rush has a clumping habit with upright cylindrical stems that are leafless and green to grey-green in color. The flowers are small, brown, and clustered at the top of the stems, blooming in summer. While not showy, the flowers add texture to the plant’s overall appearance.
Broom Rush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and for its architectural form, which adds vertical interest to water gardens, bog gardens, and other moist cultivation areas. It is also used for erosion control along waterways. This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and requires consistent moisture, making it suitable for wet areas where other plants might struggle. It prefers soils with slow to medium drainage and can tolerate standing water. While generally low-maintenance, it can spread in ideal conditions and may require division to manage its growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
