Summary
Juncus canadensis, commonly known as Canadian Rush, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to wetland habitats such as marshes, fens, wet meadows, and along the edges of ponds and streams in central and eastern Canada and the central and eastern United States. It has also been introduced to Oregon, New Zealand, and parts of Europe. Canadian Rush typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (30-90 cm) and forms dense clumps of upright, cylindrical, grass-like leaves. The inconspicuous greenish to brownish flowers appear in summer, followed by small, capsule-like fruits.
Canadian Rush is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, wetland restoration projects, and as a natural filtration system in water gardens. It is also appreciated for its low maintenance requirements and its role in supporting wetland ecosystems. While it prefers full sun to part shade, Juncus canadensis is adaptable to various light conditions and can handle a range of soil moisture levels, from standing water to moderately wet soils.
