Iris proantha, commonly known as Small Iris, is a deciduous perennial herb, native to open woodlands and meadows in South Central and Southeastern China. It typically grows up to 40–55 cm (16–22 in) in height. The leaves are narrow with 1 – 2 veins and the plant features a short flowering stem ranging from 5–28 cm (2–11 in) tall. Iris proantha blooms with a single terminal flower atop each stem between March and April, showcasing a variety of blue hues including purple, pale violet, blue, as well as white and pale pink. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy due to their coloration. The species possesses a long, brown, slender rhizome with many branches or stolons, which allow it to spread into large clumps.

Small Iris is valued for its early spring flowers and ability to form attractive clumps in garden settings. It is often used in border plantings, rock gardens, and as a ground cover due to its spreading habit. This iris is relatively low-maintenance, requiring full sun to part shade and well-drained soils. While it is not known for serious pest or disease problems, it can suffer from root rot if kept too wet.
