Summary

Hosackia gracilis, commonly known as Harlequin Lotus or Seaside Bird’s-foot Trefoil, is a perennial herb that is native to coastal prairies, bluffs, and other open areas in the Pacific Northwest, including regions from British Columbia to California. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) and spreads to a similar width. Harlequin Lotus has a sprawling habit with delicate, compound leaves and bears bright yellow flowers with pink to reddish streaks from late spring to early summer. The flowers are pea-like in form and are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

This species is valued for its ability to thrive in coastal environments, where it can tolerate salt spray and sandy soils. It is often used in restoration projects to stabilize soils and provide habitat for wildlife, including the critically endangered Lotis Blue Butterfly. Harlequin Lotus is also suitable for ornamental use in native plant gardens, where it can serve as ground cover or be planted in borders. It prefers full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
