Summary

Halesia monticola, commonly known as Mountain Silverbell, is a deciduous tree native to the rich, moist, well-drained soils of wooded slopes and ravines in the Southeastern United States, particularly in the Appalachian Mountains. It typically grows to a height of 20-40 feet (6-12 meters) and a width of 15-33 feet (5-10 meters). The tree has an attractive, rounded to oval form and is noted for its bell-shaped white flowers with occasional pink shading that appear in late spring, providing a showy display. The bark is smooth and gray, and the tree may produce a small, winged fruit that is somewhat ornamental.

Mountain Silverbell is valued for its beautiful spring flowers and is suitable for use in woodland gardens, as a specimen tree, or in naturalized areas. It prefers a partially shaded location but can tolerate full sun if kept adequately watered. It thrives in acidic, humus-rich soils with good drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and canker diseases. Gardeners should be aware that it does not transplant well due to its deep taproot, so it is best to plant it in a permanent location from a young age.CC BY-SA 4.0
