Summary

Hakea prostrata, commonly known as Harsh Hakea, is a shrub native to the sclerophyll forests and coastal heaths of Southern Australia. It typically grows to a height of 1–3 meters (3–10 feet) with spreading branchlets. This plant features oblong-obovate, stem-clasping leaves with prickly edges and a prominent central vein. From July to October, it produces an abundance of sweetly scented white or cream flowers in axillary racemose inflorescences, which are particularly attractive to bees and nectar-feeding birds. The flowers are followed by woody seed pods that are notable for their persistence on the plant.

Harsh Hakea is valued for its drought tolerance and unique foliage, making it a suitable choice for water-wise gardens and xeriscaping. It is often used as a feature shrub in native plant gardens, as well as for habitat restoration projects. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun and requires low amounts of water, preferring well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions. Harsh Hakea is not known for being invasive outside its native range, but gardeners should always monitor and manage plants responsibly to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
