Summary

Hakea eriantha, commonly known as Tree Hakea, is a shrub or small tree that is native to sclerophyll forests and coastal heathlands of eastern Australia. It typically grows 1–5 m (3.3–16 ft) tall and is characterized by its long, narrow leaves with reddish new growth. The inflorescence consists of 6-10 cream flowers on a woolly stalk about 2.5–3.5 mm (0.098–0.14 in) long, which appear in the leaf axils and bloom from late winter to early spring. The flowers are moderately showy and attract nectar-feeding birds. Tree Hakea is a fast-growing species with a dense habit, making it suitable for use as a screening or hedging plant in gardens.

Tree Hakea is valued for its hardiness, making it an excellent choice for gardens with poor soil. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. While it is tolerant of wet and cold climates, it is also quite drought-resistant once established. This plant is not commonly afflicted by diseases or pests, but it can be sensitive to Phytophthora root rot if drainage is poor. Gardeners should be aware that the plant’s needle-like foliage can be sharp and should be handled with care.CC BY-SA 4.0
