Summary
Galium asprellum, commonly known as Rough Bedstraw, is a perennial herb that thrives in a variety of habitats, including moist woodlands, stream banks, and wet meadows in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, extending to areas such as North Carolina, Tennessee, Minnesota, Ontario, and Newfoundland. It typically grows to a height of 1-4 feet (30-120 cm) with sprawling stems that can form dense mats. Rough Bedstraw features small, white to greenish flowers that bloom from June to September, which are not particularly showy but are attractive to various pollinators.
Rough Bedstraw is often used for its medicinal properties, as it contains compounds that have been used traditionally to treat a variety of ailments. In the garden, it can serve as a ground cover in moist, shaded areas. It prefers partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soils, but can tolerate a range of conditions.
