Summary
Galeopsis ladanum, commonly known as Red Hemp Nettle, is an annual herb native to a variety of habitats across Europe to Central Asia, including open woodlands, grasslands, and disturbed sites. It typically grows to a height of 10-60 cm (4-24 inches) and features hairy stems and foliage. The plant produces tubular, two-lipped flowers that are pink to purple in color, blooming from mid-summer to early autumn. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy due to their vibrant color and the dense clusters in which they appear.
Red Hemp Nettle is appreciated for its medicinal properties, as it has been used traditionally to treat various ailments. It is also valued by some gardeners for its attractive flowers and ability to attract pollinators such as bees. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils. While it is not commonly used in ornamental horticulture, it can be found in wildflower mixes and is sometimes used in restoration projects. Gardeners should be cautious, as Galeopsis ladanum can self-seed prolifically and become weedy. It is potentially invasive outside its native range, so it is essential to check local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
