Summary
Ficus ovata, commonly known as Panama Rubber Tree or Oval-leaved Fig Tree, is an evergreen tree native to Africa. It can grow at a moderate rate to a height of 20-50 feet (6-15 meters) and a width of 15-30 feet (4.6-9 meters). The Oval-leaved Fig Tree has a dense canopy with large, glossy, oval-shaped leaves that contribute to its ornamental value. Its flowers are small, green, and inconspicuous, blooming in the spring and summer, typically hidden inside specialized structures called syconia, which later mature into small, fleshy fruit.
The Panama Rubber Tree is valued for its lush foliage and adaptability to a range of urban environments, making it suitable for use as a shade tree or ornamental feature in large gardens and parks. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium or fast-draining soils such as clay, loam, or sandy types. Regular watering is necessary to maintain its health, especially in drier climates. While generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to scale insects and mealybugs. Gardeners should be aware of its potential to develop aggressive roots that can disrupt pavements or structures if planted too close.CC BY-SA 4.0
