Summary
Eutrochium fistulosum, commonly known as Hollow Joe-Pye Weed, is a deciduous perennial herb that thrives in moist meadows, wetlands, and along stream banks in the Eastern and Central United States. It can reach a towering height of up to 350 cm (140 in; 11 ft 6 in). The plant is characterized by a single, hollow, erect stem that is green with purple spots or longitudinal dashes, and upper stems that are reddish or purplish. Its large, lance-shaped leaves are arranged in whorls and have sharply serrated edges. From mid-summer to the first frosts, Hollow Joe-Pye Weed produces dense clusters of fluffy, mauve to pinkish-purple disc flowers, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and other nectar-feeding insects.
Hollow Joe-Pye Weed is valued for its statuesque form and showy flower clusters, making it a striking addition to naturalistic plantings, rain gardens, and wildlife gardens. It is also used in traditional medicine. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and requires consistently moist soil with good drainage.
