Summary

Euonymus verrucosus, commonly known as Warty Spindle or Warty Euonymus, is a deciduous shrub native to a range of habitats including broadleaf forests, forest edges, and riparian zones across Central Europe to Central Japan. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) with a similar spread, and features a rounded to upright form. The leaves are dark green, turning yellow-green to reddish-purple in autumn. Small, greenish-yellow flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, followed by pink to red fruits with orange seeds, which can be quite ornamental.

The Warty Spindle is valued for its textured, warty bark and its colorful autumn foliage. It is used in landscape plantings as a specimen or in mixed borders, and its fruits add visual interest in the fall and winter. This shrub prefers well-drained soil, tolerates a range of soil types, and can grow in full sun to part shade. It is relatively low maintenance. However, it can be susceptible to euonymus scale, an insect pest that can cause significant damage if not controlled.CC BY-SA 4.0
