Summary
Erythrophysa transvaalensis, commonly known as Bushveld red balloon, is a deciduous tree native to the Bushveld and Lowveld regions of southern Africa, specifically in Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. It is typically found in woodland areas and on rocky outcrops within savannas. The tree can reach up to 39 feet (12 meters) in height and is known for its distinctive red, balloon-like fruits which appear after the flowering season. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, but the fruits are quite showy, attracting various bird species that feed on them.
The Bushveld red balloon is valued for its ornamental fruit and is used in traditional medicine, with various parts of the plant utilized for their purported health benefits. The seeds’ historical use as beads has contributed to its spread along ancient trade routes. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. This species is also part of conservation efforts due to its ecological importance and cultural significance. It is not commonly found in cultivation outside its native range, but it can be used as a feature tree in gardens that can replicate its natural growing conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
