Eryngium alternatum, commonly known as Amecameca Sea Holly, is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the high-altitude grasslands and rocky areas of Central and Northeastern Mexico. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). This plant features a rosette of spiny, variegated leaves and striking thistle-like flowers that are blue and white, blooming in the summer months. The flowers are highly ornamental and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Amecameca Sea Holly is valued for its unique appearance, drought tolerance, and its ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and as an accent plant in borders. It is also used for cut flowers due to its long-lasting blooms. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-drained soil.
