Summary

Eriogonum luteolum, commonly known as goldencarpet buckwheat, is an annual herb native to the chaparral, scrub, and open woodlands of California and southern Oregon, particularly in the Sierra Nevada, Cascades, and California Coast Ranges. It thrives on a variety of soil types, including granite and serpentine, and is often found in mountain and foothill habitats. Goldencarpet buckwheat typically exhibits a variable form, either erect up to 24 inches tall or prostrate, with woolly basal leaves and branches that bear small clusters of flowers ranging from white to pink or yellow, blooming from late spring to early fall.

This species is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, native plant gardens, and restoration projects. It is also appreciated for its attractive flowers, which provide nectar for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Goldencarpet buckwheat requires minimal maintenance once established, preferring full sun and well-drained soils. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
