Eleocharis ovata, commonly known as Ovate Spikerush, is a perennial herb that can be evergreen or semi-deciduous depending on the climate. It is native to wetlands, including marshes, swamps, and the edges of ponds and streams, in North America and Eurasia. This sedge typically grows to a height of 0.2-2 feet (0.06-0.6 meters) and spreads 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters), forming dense clumps of grass-like foliage. The plant produces small, greenish-brown spikelets that may not be particularly showy but are interesting upon close inspection. Flowering occurs in late spring to summer.

Ovate Spikerush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and filter water in wetland restoration projects. It is also used ornamentally in water gardens, rain gardens, and as a ground cover in moist areas of the landscape. It requires consistently moist to wet soil and can even grow in shallow water, making it suitable for pond edges and bog gardens. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate part shade. Ovate Spikerush is relatively low-maintenance but may spread aggressively in ideal conditions.
