Doodia aspera, commonly known as Prickly Rasp Fern, is a terrestrial fern native to the understory of rainforest margins and open eucalyptus forests in eastern Australia, particularly in Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. It thrives on sandstone and igneous substrates within well-drained sandy or gravelly soils, often seen in the Blue Mountains region. This fern typically features rough-textured fronds that are 8 to 18 inches long, with distinctive reddish new growth that adds ornamental appeal.

Prickly Rasp Fern is valued for its adaptability in cultivation and its attractive foliage. It can grow in both shaded and sunny locations and prefers acidic soils. The fern’s new growth, which ranges from pinkish to reddish hues, is especially appealing in the garden. It is used for ground cover in shaded garden areas or as an understory plant in woodland gardens. While it is generally low-maintenance, it does require consistently moist soil conditions.
