Summary
Desmodium cinerascens, commonly known as Spiked Ticktrefoil, is a perennial herb native to the Southwestern United States and Mexico. It typically grows up to 2 feet in height and features trifoliate leaves with a distinctive silvery-gray pubescence, giving it the ’ash-colored’ moniker. From late summer to early fall, it produces small, showy clusters of pink to purple flowers that are attractive to pollinators. The plant is also known for its loment fruit, which readily adheres to clothing and fur, aiding in seed dispersal.
Spiked Ticktrefoil is valued for its nitrogen-fixing ability, which enriches the soil and supports the growth of surrounding plants. It is often used in native plant gardens, prairie restorations, and as a cover crop in agricultural settings. This species is relatively low maintenance, tolerating a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is drought-tolerant once established. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from foliar diseases in humid conditions. Its ability to spread via seeds and rhizomes should be considered when planting, as it may become aggressive in some settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
