Summary
Daviesia latifolia, commonly known as Hop Bitter-Pea, is an evergreen shrub native to the sclerophyll forests and woodland areas of Eastern Australia. It is characterized by an erect habit, typically reaching 1–5 m (3 ft 3 in – 16 ft 5 in) in height and 1.0–1.5 m (3 ft 3 in – 4 ft 11 in) in width, with arching, glabrous branches. The Hop Bitter-Pea blooms from September to December, producing yellow and red pea-like flowers that are moderately showy. The fruit is a distinctive triangular pod. This species is recognized for its ornamental value, particularly its attractive foliage and flowers, and its ability to act as a windbreak. It also contributes to soil health by fixing nitrogen.
Hop Bitter-Pea is a versatile plant in cultivation, suitable for use as an ornamental shrub in gardens, as a windbreak in rural settings, and for its nitrogen-fixing abilities which can improve soil fertility. It thrives in well-drained soil, tolerates frost, and prefers full sun but can also do well in part shade. While it can become somewhat drought-tolerant once established, it should still be watered regularly during prolonged dry periods. Gardeners should note that while it is generally low-maintenance, it may require occasional pruning to maintain its shape and promote denser growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
