Summary
Cyanea superba, commonly known as Mt. Kaala cyanea or superb cyanea, is a rare Hawaiian lobelioid that was historically endemic to the moist and wet forests of the Waianae Mountains on Oahu. It is now considered extinct in the wild but persists through cultivation and reintroduction efforts. This perennial herb typically grows to a height of 1-2 meters and features large, showy, trumpet-shaped flowers that are purple to lavender in color, blooming from July to October. The plant’s striking appearance and rarity make it a point of interest for conservationists and botanical enthusiasts.
In cultivation, Cyanea superba requires a sheltered environment with high humidity, consistent moisture, and well-draining soil to mimic its native forest habitat. It is often grown in botanical gardens and conservation areas as part of efforts to preserve the species. The plant benefits from a partially shaded location that provides protection from direct sunlight. Challenges in cultivation include vulnerability to snails, slugs, and other pests that can damage the foliage and flowers. Due to its rarity and specific growing conditions, it is not commonly used in general landscape planting but serves as an important subject for conservation and educational purposes.CC BY-SA 4.0
