Summary
Cussonia paniculata, commonly known as Mountain Cabbagetree, is an evergreen tree or large shrub native to rocky outcrops and dry bushveld in South Africa, Lesotho, and Botswana. It can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) in height and is notable for its thick, corky bark and bold, grey-green foliage that resembles a cabbage, hence the common name. The leaves are large, palmately compound, and can create a dramatic texture in the landscape. Cussonia paniculata blooms with tall, branched inflorescences bearing small, greenish-yellow flowers, which are typically followed by small, fleshy fruits.
The Mountain Cabbagetree is valued for its architectural form. It is also used as a focal point in subtropical and Mediterranean-style landscapes. This plant is adapted to a variety of soil types, provided they are well-drained, and it can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
