Summary
Coronilla valentina, commonly known as Scorpion Vetch, is an evergreen shrub native to coastal areas, rocky slopes, and scrublands in the Mediterranean region, including Southern Europe and the Balkans. It typically grows to 80 cm (31 in) in both height and width. The plant has pinnate, blue-green leaves and bears clusters of fragrant, brilliant yellow flowers in spring and summer, which are particularly aromatic during the day and less so at night, as noted by Linnaeus. The flowers give way to slender, elongated seed pods. Scorpion Vetch is valued for its extended blooming period and the sweet scent of its flowers.
Scorpion Vetch thrives in conditions that mimic its native Mediterranean climate, requiring well-drained soil, full sun, and protection from cold winds. It is relatively hardy but performs best with some shelter and warm sunshine. This shrub is often used in rock gardens, as part of border plantings, or in coastal gardens due to its tolerance of salty air. It is also appreciated for its drought tolerance once established. Gardeners should monitor this plant outside its native range to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
