Summary
Commelina undulata, commonly known as Wavy Dayflower, is a perennial herb native to tropical and subtropical Asia, including regions such as India, China, and Taiwan. It thrives in a variety of habitats including moist and shaded areas, forest margins, grasslands, and along streams. The plant exhibits a moderate growth rate and typically reaches a height of 0.5-1.5 feet (0.15-0.5 meters). Wavy Dayflower is characterized by its lance-shaped, undulating leaves and distinctive tri-petaled blue flowers that bloom profusely in the summer and fall, adding a splash of color to the garden.
The Wavy Dayflower is valued for its ornamental blue flowers and its ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it a suitable choice for woodland gardens, borders, and as ground cover. It prefers part shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. The plant does best in medium draining loam or clay soils and requires consistent moisture to flourish. While it is not typically prone to serious pest or disease problems, it can spread in some regions due to its spreading rhizomes and self-seeding habit. Gardeners should be mindful of its potential to spread when planting in mixed borders or near natural areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
