Summary
Clerodendrum phlomidis, commonly known as Arni, is a large deciduous shrub native to dry deciduous forests and scrublands of the Indian subcontinent, including India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. It typically grows to a height of 6-12 feet (1.8-3.6 meters) with a similar spread. The plant features ovate, opposite leaves and produces clusters of fragrant white or pinkish flowers that are quite showy, blooming from August to February. The bark is grey and flaky, and while the plant does not produce notable berries or fruit, its flowers are attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Arni is valued in cultivation for its medicinal properties and fragrant, ornamental flowers. It is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, notably as a component of Dash Mool. In gardens, it can be used as a specimen plant or in mixed shrub borders, and it thrives in full sun to part shade with moderate water requirements. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate drought once established. There are no widely known popular garden cultivars of this species. Potential problems include root rot in overly wet conditions and pests such as scale insects and mealybugs.CC BY-SA 4.0
