Summary
Chaerophyllum temulum, commonly known as rough chervil, is a biennial herb native to a variety of habitats across Europe, extending into the Maghreb and Western Asia, including Turkey and the Caucasus. It is commonly found in damp meadows, hedgerows, open woodlands, and woodland edges, as well as disturbed areas such as roadsides and waste places. Rough chervil typically reaches up to 39 inches in height and is characterized by its purple-spotted stems and bi- to tri-pinnate leaves. From late spring to early summer, it produces compound umbels of small, white flowers that are attractive to a variety of pollinators.
Rough chervil is not commonly cultivated but can be found in naturalistic plantings and wildlife gardens where its flowers can support local insect populations. It prefers moist, fertile soils and can tolerate partial shade, making it suitable for woodland garden settings. However, it is potentially invasive in some regions outside its native range, and gardeners should be cautious about introducing it to new areas. It requires little maintenance once established, but its biennial nature means it will die after setting seed in its second year.CC BY-SA 4.0
