Summary
Carex secta, commonly known as Makura Grass or Purei, is an evergreen perennial sedge native to wetlands, swamps, and the margins of forested areas in New Zealand, including the Chatham Islands. It typically grows to a height and width of 3 feet (0.9 meters), forming dense clumps of bright green, arching foliage. The plant produces inconspicuous brown flower spikes in spring, which are followed by small, greenish-brown fruits. The foliage remains vibrant throughout the year, adding texture and color to garden settings.
Makura Grass is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and its use in water filtration in wetland restoration projects. It is also popular in ornamental gardens for its lush, grassy appearance and ease of maintenance. In cultivation, it requires consistent moisture and can tolerate a range of soil types, from medium to poorly drained soils. It thrives in full sun to part shade conditions.
